It All Began With A Little Circle Time Conundrum.
As a preschool teacher, I loved to sing, rhyme, and romp around with my students. But after a while, the same old activities started feeling a bit stale. In fact, about as exciting as a damp graham cracker. I needed something to spice things up. To grab the kids’ (and my) attention while sneaking in some early learning along the way.
Enter: The Flannel Board! A clever co-teacher introduced me to this nifty tool, and nifty indeed it was. It added a little extra oomph to circle time. It kept the wiggliest kids engaged. It helped even the most hesitant teachers lead activities without breaking a sweat.
Around the same time, local librarians began visiting my school. They toted along their own flannel boards and shared fun stories. Between my classroom discoveries and those library visits, something became quite clear. Flannel board sets were like a story time secret sauce, and they made learning feel like play.
Soon, I was creating my own sets (complete with playful rhymes and games) to make learning feel, well…fun.
Word spread fast about these fun, felty storytimes. My co-workers started inviting little old me to their classrooms to share my felt board songs and stories with their kids. Whaat??! Yep. That’s how Flannel Board Fun was born. I realized how much we teachers all crave simple, fun tools that work for everyone.
And it wasn’t only the teachers who loved the sets. The kids wanted to keep playing long after circle time ended. So, I started creating open-ended sets for independent play, with little bits of learning sprinkled in.
Eventually, I thought, “Why keep this felty fun to myself?” Now, I get to bring my very own felt board sets to more educators and kids. And I even started making video demos. You know, for busy educators and librarians who don’t have time to reinvent the storytime wheel. And for all the DIY lovers, there are now Flannel Board Fun patterns too.
I’m all about keeping storytime engaging, playful, and stress-free. My felt board sets make teaching easier and learning a whole lot of fun. Because come on now… storytime should be a lot more fun than nap time (not to mention stale graham crakers!)
